Renal Diet Plan: Update on Kidney Diet plan with Keto and Fasting August 2019

ketogenic plan 20 Comments »

Episode 52: Renal Diet Plan: Update on Kidney Diet plan with Keto and Fasting August 2019. I’m often asked, how is my kidney diet plan going and what am I doing for my renal diet? What renal diet foods am I eating, what does a typical meal look like with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)? Here is my Kidney Diet plan update for August 2019.

One thing which is certainly true about fighting and beating CKD is that everything changes. The renal diet plan I had at Stage 5 was much stricter than the plan I had in Stage 4, and even then my plan changed as I got close to Stage 3.

With each set of lab results, I used my bloodwork to re-optimize my renal diet and make changes. All of this was done working with my doctors – I needed their experience and knowledge to plan the next steps in my treatment strategy.

So where am I with my renal diet plan in August 2019?
Many months ago I switched to a Ketogenic diet, modified to not aggravate my kidneys and cause inflammation. This required keeping a close eye on Potassium. Keto diets typically use Avocado for their healthy fat and Tomatoes. These are both high in Potassium, so I needed to limit them.

A quick note on potassium – too much is very bad at Stage 4 and 5, but with a higher GFR, potassium can actually be protective of your kidneys. With each new GFR I asked my doctors for an update to my daily minimum and maximums for Potassium, Phosphorus, Sodium, Protein, Carbs, Calcium, and Calories. These levels will adjust as your GFR changes – if your doctor isn’t adjusting them, ask them WHY to help remind them they should be adjusting them.

After the first 45 days of a Keto diet I got my labs. Nearly everything moved into range nicely – including my Red Blood Cell Count and Hemoglobin’s – I was now no longer suffering from any anemia. This gave me a boost in energy and made me feel 20 years younger.

Not all was rainbow and unicorns. My Creatinine and BUN went up slightly. But I didn’t panic, it was very slightly, and my doctor warned me that might happen. Overall I was healthier though – my labs looked really good. The Keto diet plan I was on had a lot more animal-protein than I was eating and that was the cause of the increase in Creatinine and BUN.

We modified my diet again and I’m now eating very little animal protein. I am nearly vegetarian and I mainly eat animal protein as Tuna or grilled chicken with mixed veggies.

The majority of my meals are now stir fry in a cast iron wok. I’ll throw in some Ghee for healthy fat, and flavor, mix in carrots, broccoli, snow peas, cauliflower, a little kale and spinach, and other veggies and cook them up. I’ll make up my own sauce with vinegar, pineapple juice, low sodium soy sauce, ginger and other ingredients. For protein I may add an egg or two just before I’m done cooking the veggies.

I’m also eating a lot of salads and adding homemade tuna salad to them. I hate fish, so I make my tuna salad with vegan mayo, sliced celery & onions, little mustard, and lemon juice. I’ll even make a tuna sandwich using Low Carb high fiber wraps.

Beating Cancer with a Ketogenic Diet

ketogenic plan 20 Comments »

In July 2013 Alison Gannett was found to have a deadly baseball-sized malignant cancerous brain tumor in her frontal lobe. After an initial partial surgery, Alison has forgone traditional approaches and instead has used a ketogenic diet, DNA testing, and a new lifestyle to starve the remaining cancer cells and provide health to the rest of her body.

Her new goal is to help others customize their diets and lifestyles to either prevent cancer or conquer cancer, and also to start ketogenic cooking camps at their farm.

_______

“For the last several years I’ve been doing a therapeutic ketogenic diet which is very high levels of fat, two and a half cups of fat a day, nine cups of low glycemic vegetables and I’ve been using that to treat my terminal malignant brain cancer because cancer can only ferment glucose so I deprive it of glucose and give it plenty of fatty acids and it can’t grow or spread or do anything. My name is Allison Gannett and we’re here at Holy Terror farm which is where I live and work. I have many different hats for occupations. I’m a cancer survivor a ketogenic diet coach. I’m a world champion extreme skier and a climate change consultant.

In 2013, I started behaving very strangely and one day I almost burned the house down making bacon and at that moment my husband knew that I wasn’t just acting bizarrely—that something was truly wrong. He brought me to the emergency room and they found a baseball-sized tumor in my brain and the diagnosis was terminal malignant brain cancer. They rushed me into surgery and said please sign this paper—I don’t even remember signing the paper nor do I remember them you know telling me the odds of coming out of a brain surgery that severe were not good. They extracted one baseball-sized tumor out of the front of my brain—you can see the little dent my head right here and the scar is actually hidden up here in my hairline—very nice that they can do that these day—and they did miss another tumor right here by my ear. I call him Junior and he is kind of my barometer anytime I want to eat something sugary or carb-y, I think about junior as a little Pacman and it keeps me from ever cheating. So a friend of a friend suggested that I get in touch with Dr. Nasha winters of Optimal Terrain Consulting immediately. She put me on the ketogenic diet.

The amazing thing about being on this diet that I never expected is not only is it yummy and delicious but it’s had a lot of interesting side effects that I never expected. My Polycystic Ovarian Disease has completely disappeared in two years. My Hashimoto’s thyroiditis was gone in eighteen months. My breast fibroids were gone in five months and those probably would have turned into [they were worried about] cancer with those. You know, I make recipes of all my favorite foods that I used to like like macaroni and cheese and pizza and ice cream and brownies. I figured out how to make all of those without sugar and Lakanto been key for that for me because it’s the first non-glycemic sweetener that actually tastes good. When my doctor put me on the ketogenic diet, my first thought was what do I eat, you know? how do I get all this fat in my diet and what do I do to replace all the things I love like where’s my ice cream? Where’s my brownies? Where’s my pancakes? And at first I just deprived myself of all that food and that wasn’t very fun. And then I started playing with some recipes and trying some different alternative sweeteners.

I grew stevia and yokan and tried flavoring things with those and they were okay but it wasn’t what I remembered. And then my husband was trying all my recipes and he hated everything! He thought all the sweeteners—he was just making horrible faces every time I made ice cream—and then one day I ordered Lakanto on the internet and I made ice cream–vanilla ice cream and I handed it to him and he had this big smile on his face and he was like: “this is the best ice cream I’ve ever had!” I couldn’t believe it! He hadn’t liked anything I’d made in over a year and a half so ever since then we’ve used nothing but. I could have my cake eat it to. Cure my brain cancer and have a brownie and ice cream for lunch every day. I sometimes have ice cream and brownie for breakfast–but I still get my nine cups of veggies in every day.

When I help other people with my coaching, to have them use the ketogenic diet for cancer or for Alzheimer’s or diabetes–it has to be delicious for them in the same way. It’s delicious for me so I helped them recreate their favorite recipes and having a sweetener that is palatable, yummy and non glycemic non GMO is so important to me and to them.”

Keto Beef Chow Mein – keto recipes – ketogenic diet – low carb – keto diet – intermittent fasting

ketogenic recipe 12 Comments »

This Delicious Keto Beef Chow Mein really impressed me how delicious and tender it came out. I love Chow Mein so much but definitely do not love the fact that it is not low carb. I am always looking for ways to modify my favorite foods into healthier diet friendly versions of themselves as you guys all know. I went to look in my fridge and there it was, zucchini noodles and unfrozen piece of fresh grass fed beef. A match made in heaven for my recipe. Although I am intermittent fasting currently I still try to have ketones as my primary fuel source most of the time and try to keep most of my meals very low carb.

These Low-Carb Keto bread buns (or rolls) are very easy to make and can be a great meal replacement or snack. We like to top ours with butter or cream cheese, sea salt, bacon and cheese. They’re also great as burger buns. We believe these taste much better than the usual Keto bread, which is often made with only almond flour and eggs.

Once again we included the nutritional value within the recipe video!

Ingredients:
75g almond flour
20g pysllium husk powder
30g coconut flour
38g ground flaxseed
3 egg whites
1 whole egg
240ml boiling water

We originally found this recipe a little more than a year ago on the (paid) KetoDiet app for Android and only slightly altered it. We just leave out the garlic & onion powder as well as the sesame seeds to make it a little simpler. Martina (KetoDietApp) deserves the credit 🙂

She actually has it on her website as well: http://ketodietapp.com/Blog/post/2014/11/12/Ultimate-Keto-Buns

Why We Should Eat A Paleo-ketogenic Diet

ketogenic plan 20 Comments »

The Benefits Of A Paleo-ketogenic Lifestyle

In this piece, Dr. Sarah Myhill, one of the world’s leading physicians in the fight against both Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, is asked why we should eat a paleo-ketogenic diet. Her answer lays out the basis for her nutritional approach to both maintaining health and curing disease.

The harms of sugar and simple carbohydrates are plainly evident in our increasingly obese populations, in which chronic illness and dementias, cancers and heart and arterial disease are rife.

So what does the paleo-ketogenic diet offer us? Dr. Myhill explains that the PK diet gives us a way to eat a healthy, delicious, and well-rounded diet that is not dependent on sugars and carbohydrates for its calories. Human cells can derive energy from sugars or fats and fibres, and when we switch over into relying on the latter, we are eating in the way we have evolved to over a long period of our time on earth.

She points out that as more and more diseases are found to have an infectious driver or substrate when we eat PK, we are also starving the bacteria, yeasts, viruses, and protozoa that use sugars and carbohydrates as their fuel. They cannot thrive on fats and fibres, but we can. This represents one of our best means to avoid or treat infectious disease.

So if you want to live more vibrantly, stay at a healthy weight and sidestep many of the modern diseases of affluence, eat paleo-ketogenic. Dr. Myhill and her co-author, Craig Robinson, have written a book that’s for anyone who wants to do this. It is especially relevant to those suffering from long-term illness, and has been written in such a way that it’s both easy to follow, and put into practice.
